The drone/small UAV guys have some really neat digital ISM radios. I have a 3D Robotics compatible 900MHz telemetry radio set that runs at 56Kbps and connects using USB and serial. From the PC side it is just a dumb serial port device, just dump data in and it comes out the other end. With gain antennas it will connect for several miles line of site, although I haven't tested beyond a few hundred feet.

The Herelink radio system combines transmitter/receiver, dual HD video streams and telemetry over 2.4 and 5 GHz radios.

Just pointing this out because even though there's probably a good deal of crossover between the ham and RC hobby community, there's not much crossover when it comes to borrowing hardware.
