ZRI: Radio technology (wireless) is a significant interest at HOPE, and I’m told there will be a significant Amateur Radio presence at HOPE, including the Ham Radio for Hackers session (Dan Romanchik KB6NU).

✅ Appalachian Trail Golden Packet 2024

2024-07-20 along the Appalachian Trail (Eastern USA)

Every year for the past 15 years, licensed amateur radio operators coordinate 15+ sites along the length of the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. We use transceivers to exchange packet data between each site with the goal of sending the "golden packet" the entire length of the trail!

Robert Bruninga (WB4APR - Silent Key), the creator of the APRS protocol, founded the Appalachian Trail Golden Packet event. The intent is to get licensed amateur radio operators ("hams") to feel more comfortable with operating in the field, while demonstrating the ability to send real-time messages along 2200+ miles without the need for any infrastructure!

ZRI: Event uses Amateur Radio Packet Radio exclusively for communications.

The Central States VHF Society, Inc. (CSVHFS) is a not-for-profit organization chartered in the state of Missouri. It was begun in the mid-1960s to foster amateur radio operation on the bands above 50 MHz. Membership currently numbers about 300, principally in the Midwest states. However, it has members in states from the Atlantic Coast to the West Coast as well as Canada and several foreign countries.
The CSVHFS holds a Technical Conference once a year. The goal of the conference is to raise the technical level of amateurs by providing a forum for presenting technical papers relating to VHF, UHF, and Microwave, to provide a focal point for the discussion on operating practices and procedures, on exploration of modes such as EME, MS, FAI, E-skip, etc. and other topics that promote operation on Amateur bands above 50MHz.

AMSAT-DL Bochum Space Conference 2024

AMSAT-DL is organizing a symposium, flea market and general meeting in the radome of the Bochum Observatory. The radome will once again be dedicated to satellite and space research.
AMSAT Deutschland e.V. and the Bochum Observatory are taking the positive experience of the anniversary conference in 2023 as an opportunity to inform AMSAT members and other space enthusiasts about current and future prospects for national and international space projects with a varied program. 🆕 Deep Space Exploration Society Open House 2024

In addition to demonstrating the many capabilities of our 60 foot radio telescope, we offer a STEM and Amateur Radio event with optical telescopes on site for viewing the skies. Our new building will be open for visitors.

A ham radio station using the DSES club call sign, KØPRT (Plishner Radio Telescope) will be on HF and VHF radio bands. Using the big dish we will also be working Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) contacts on 1296 MHz – hear your own voice bounced off the moon!

We have been able to observe SDR technology to become mainstream in the industry and in Amateur Radio alike, with prices for radios tumbling while devices becoming more versatile as their features and functionalities are defined by software mostly.

But this is not the end of a development. We are observing also that FPGAs are becoming more powerful, pushing the doors wide open for new radio applications that will shape our daily life in the future.

So this is the background on which we are working to bring together a community of academic researchers, industry and radio amateurs, promote knowledge about SDR.

ZRI: Software Defined Radio development, specifically targeted at Amateur Radio, is a Zero Retries Interesting area of interest.
