R-Pi with Direwolf & hamlib-rigctld made a good combo with my IC-7100, although any radio would be fine. A network accessible & controllable TNC at my fingertips. I used it for APRS for a while and then Winlink RMS & P2P. The conundrum is that setup is best on Linux, while there is so much important ham software that is closed source and Windows-only that I can't make it a permanent feature of the shack. Now I have to settle for dual booting Windows & Linux on the same machine so that I don't have to recable everything to try out new stuff.

Chris - Like in business, most of our fellow computer-using humans, and more recently Amateur Radio, Windows is an inescapable part of modern life. We don't have to like it (especially now that Windows is more of a "service" than an OS), but if we decide "I don't do Windows" one cuts themselves off from a lot of good and fun software in Amateur Radio. In my Amateur Radio activity, Windows is readily at hand as a "tool", but it's not my primary or preferred computing environment (Raspberry Pi / Raspberry Pi OS).

Hi Steve. I don't disagree. There's a lot of useful software that only runs on Windows, and there's lots of irritating problems that occur on both operating systems. It doesn't look like I'll be switching any time soon. I can't even find a decent logger than runs on my flavour of Linux, so my only hope of keeping it around is running Windows in a VM.
