Steve, I'm assisting in forming a group out of northern Kentucky building a digital data network on the ham bands. To support that end, I'm building a wiki that comprises some of the resources that you have mentioned. Would you mind checking out the site and providing any feedback you may have ? Thanks in advance John N3XKD

John, neat page, and good to hear that there's going to be more data activity in Kentucky!

Here are some suggestions to add depending on the goals of the group.

Icom's DD mode does 128 kbps in a 100 kHz channel on 1200 MHz. Requires a (out of production) ID-1 user radio or Icom IC-9700 user radio and an Icom 1200 MHz DV (DIgital Voice) / DD (Digital Data) repeater. It's pricey, but it's off the shelf with no issues about "slowing it down" like there is with New Packet Radio.

HAMNET is a European microwave (mostly) network that has published a lot of good info.

Amateur Radio Operators, just like anyone else, can buy, build, and operate networks of "Part 15" (license-exempt - 5.8 GHz, etc.) microwave radios. In some ways they're superior to AREDN and HamWAN as there are no issues with encryption, callsign identification, etc.

I suggest listing some available radios good for higher speed data communications (have the universal data jack) such as the Yaesu FTM-6000R.

Dire Wolf is a software TNC approach (similar to VARA FM).

The best (that I'm aware of) "modem" for high speed software such as VARA FM and Dire Wolf is Masters Communications Digital Radio Adapters product line - https://www.masterscommunications.com/products/radio-adapter/dra/dra-index.html
