AREDN Equivalent for VHF / UHF
But in my opinion, we need an equivalent to AREDN that can operate on VHF / UHF bands. Blending some of the elements from above:
Use our “awesome transmit power” levels, like 25 / 50 watt transmit power
Use our ability to operate on multiple bands simultaneously, such as 50-54 MHz, 144-148 MHz, 222-225 MHz, and 440-450 MHz.
Mesh networking, especially cross-band, such as MOP, IP400, and Net/ROM.
Use repeater technology and coverage, such as SuperPeater.
Achieve reasonable speeds for narrow channels such as VARA FM, up to 100 kbps such as New Packet Radio.
Use TCP/IP (IPv4 initially, and eventually IPv6) to interoperate with AREDN.
Universally implement AX.25 Version 2.2.
In suggesting all of the above, it seems to me that Amateur Radio needs at least one coherent, consistent, interoperable “network strategy” in the mid-2020s and beyond.
I’m going to call it ARDNET - Amateur Radio Data Network.
