GTDATA

Formerly / also known as MMDVM-TNC

(May need to recreate this page with a better URL if G4KLX doesn’t agree with / begin using the name GTDATA.)

Kind of a game plan, in stages

  • Article to explain why it’s different from previous data

    • 9600 lowest speed

    • Robust waveform derived from DMR

    • IL2P FEC

    • List of usable modes

      • 9600

      • (List faster speeds)

    • Can create a GTDATA repeater

    • Compatible implementions

      • NinoTNC, including derivates such as SMT NinoTNC and Matchbox APRS

      • IP400 project to do something with GTDATA

  • Testing in N8GNJ / Zero Retries Labs

    • Make sure I have a second ZUMRadio MMDVM-Pi; if not, get one on order.

    • Fabricate a test setup of two radios with flat audio connections

      • Radio with dummy load

      • Custom cable - 6-pin MiniDIN to MMDVM-Pi cable harness

        • Diagram this so others can easily replicate

      • MMDVM-Pi with Raspberry Pi 3B+

      • Optimize signal levels

    • Do some actual radio-to-radio testing of GTDATA

      • Do some real world benchmarks using big file transfers

      • Benchmark against VARA FM

        • Use same radios

      • Set up a repeater for GTDATA using MMDVM-Pi

        • Special configuration instructions?

        • Probably need another MMDVM-Pi

        • Build per xxxx’s build instructions

        • Test direct versus repeater throughput

        • Try to do more real world repeater testing; put up repeater at a temporary high point and radios with real antennas

          • Operating at power - 25 or 50 watts

      • Set up Software Defined Receiver so the test radio traffic can be easily monitored.

  • Set up dedicated external access to N8GNJ / Zero Retries Labs “Test LAN”

    • Starlink Mini (capped at 500 kbps)

    • 44Net VPN for static IPv4 addresses that can be accessed from the Internet

    • Put the two MMDVM-Pi Raspberry Pi 3B+ on this LAN

    • Potentially allow G4KLX to shell into the RPis to observe, test, and potentially upload new versions.

    • externally accessible

  • Develop use cases

    • File flood

    • File transfers

  • Set up a “road show capable” demo system that can be taken to large conferences such as Pacificon

    • Use less expensive (surplus commercial?) radios

  • Promote!

    • Articles in Zero Retries

    • YouTube videos

Questions / TBDs:

  • Web page needed

    • Dedicated GTDATA.org (?) web page?

    • GTDATA sub-page on MMDVM.com?

  • Need to understand if G4KLX followed through with using elements of G3RUH’s flavor of 9600. If so, what improvement does that make?

  • Create a “GTDATA” “organization” to promote compatible implementations such as was done with NinoTNC?
